Why does cellular work better than Wi-Fi for remote and rural gate access?
Wi-Fi gate systems require the gate to be within range of your home router — typically 50–150 feet through walls. For long driveways, rural properties, and perimeter gates, this is often impossible. Nimbio works as a cellular gate opener: a pre-installed LTE SIM connects the controller directly to the nearest cellular tower, regardless of distance from the house — no Wi-Fi bridge, and no legacy GSM dial-up service, which has largely been retired in the United States.

Why is there a monthly subscription instead of a one-time purchase?
The $299 hardware is a one-time cost. The subscription covers what the hardware alone can’t provide: the pre-installed multi-carrier cellular SIM’s ongoing data connection, and the enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure behind real-time key issuance, revocation, entry logs, and GuestView. A device with no monthly fee typically also has no cellular connection — it depends on your property’s own Wi-Fi instead, which brings back the range and reliability limits covered in the cellular-vs-Wi-Fi comparison above. Residential billing is flat-rate per home, not per user, so adding family members never increases the cost.
Does Nimbio work if my property has no internet connection?
Yes. Nimbio runs entirely over cellular LTE using a pre-installed multi-carrier SIM. No internet service, Wi-Fi router, or telephone landline is needed at the property. If LTE coverage is available at your gate location, Nimbio works.
Will Nimbio drain my solar battery?
Unlikely. Nimbio draws 40mA–70mA at 24VDC during standby — roughly comparable to a small LED lamp. Its 2.4-Watt peak draw is designed to be compatible with standard solar gate battery systems. We recommend confirming your panel and battery capacity with your solar gate installer.
What gate brands work with Nimbio on rural and estate properties?
Any gate operator with a 6.5V–24V power source and a dry-contact input is compatible. This covers LiftMaster, Linear, Apollo, FAAC, Elite, Ghost Controls, US Automatic, and others. For external legacy enclosures, a NEMA weatherproof enclosure is recommended.
Can delivery drivers open the gate without me being home?
Yes. When they scan the QR code or tap the NFC panel at the gate, GuestView texts your phone a link to a video call (one-way by default, two-way if you turn on your camera) — tap it to see them and open the gate remotely, from anywhere. For a hands-off delivery, generate a time-limited access code in the app instead; they enter it in the web directory, and every use is logged.
Does Nimbio support electric locks as well as gate operators?
Yes. While the majority of Nimbio customers use it to add app control to an existing gate operator, Nimbio also supports electric strike and magnetic lock retrofits. Any electric lock with a dry-contact input at 6.5V–24V is compatible.
